Lovita DeWitt, 100, Green Bay, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2018. Born in Green Bay on January 8, 1918 she is the daughter of the late Martin and Antoinette (Nockerts) VanBeek. In 1935 she graduated from East High School. Lovita earned a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Oshkosh University and taught three years in Sheboygan Falls then 30 years in Green Bay elementary schools (F.D.R. and Danz). She was named Green Bay's candidate for "Wisconsin Elementary Teacher of the Year" in 1985. On June 21, 1941 she married Henry J. DeWitt at St. Philip’s Church and he preceded her in death on May 28, 1966. Lovita was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Church and their Ladies Altar Society, the Brown County Retired Educator’s Association and the Heritage Hill Society. After retiring she volunteered at Danz School, the American Red Cross, Heritage Hill and Bornemann’s Nursing Home.
Survived by her 3 daughters: Nancy (Alan) Wentworth, Mary (Greg) Staples, and Susan (Gerald) Gantz; 11 grandchildren: Troy (Vicki) DeWitt, Tanya (Steve) Cornell, Lillie (Tony) Conrad, Ryan (Lindsay) Moore, Melissa Moore, Celeste (Ben Martinez) Moore, Alison Lindner, Anna (Adam) Field, Sarah (Chet) Gantz Susslin, Tyler Gantz, Erica (fiancee’ Drew) Gantz; 12 great grandchildren, 2 step sisters: Rosalind (Mike) Boncher, Dolly (Lyle) Boncher, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Also preceded in death by her son Tom DeWitt, step mother: LaBelle (Arthur) VanBeek, twin brothers: Robert and Roger VanBeek, step brother: Victor Arthur and step sister Rosalind Boncher.
Friends may call at Malcore (East) Funeral Home, 701 North Baird Street, from 5 – 8 P.M. Sunday. Monday visitation will continue at SS. Peter & Paul Parish, 710 North Baird Street from 9:30 A.M. Monday until the time of the funeral. Mass of Christian Burial Monday 10:30 A.M. at SS. Peter & Paul Parish with the Most Reverend Robert F. Morneau officiating. Burial in Allouez Catholic Cemetery.
