James “Jim” Vandervest, 89, New Franken, died Wednesday, July 18, 2018. Born November 27, 1928, he is the son of the late Jule and Lillian (Dupont) Vandervest. Jim married the former Arlene Martin on May 2, 1950, at St. Odile Church in Thiry Daems. Together, the couple worked the family farm while raising their family. Arlene preceded him in death on October 1, 2016. Jim enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, riding horses and also playing cards with neighbors and friends.
Jim is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Mitch Ostrenga, Denmark; one son, Chris Vandervest, New Franken; four grandchildren, Mike Ostrenga, Amy Ostrenga, Tina (Andy) Young, and Paul Ostrenga; two great-grandchildren, Megan and Macy Young; two sisters-in-law; Jenny Vandervest, Green Bay and Jean (Norman) Zellner, Luxemburg; one brother-in-law, Earl Martin, Luxemberg; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Joe Vandervest; three brothers, Irwin, Merle (Evelyn), and Elmer (Florence) Vandervest; and one sister, Marie (Elmer) Renier.
Private family services were held with Malcore (East) Funeral Home serving the family. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Champion.
