9/11/2015 My Obituary

Maria Reiter Harnowski, Born on May 8, 1926 and raised in Slovakia. From 1939-1945 (my teenage years 13-19) were overshadowed by World War II. After the war my family and relatives were scattered to 4 different countries: Slovakia, Germany, Poland and the United States. In Germany I met and married John Harnowski and followed him to Poland in hope that at least he could find his family from whom he was taken away at the age of 18. In the meantime his parents and siblings were sent to Siberia and were never reunited. All of my 4 children were born in Poland and in November of 1963 our family came to America. Our ship arrived at New York Port shortly after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. From New York, New York to Cleveland, Ohio then to Green Bay, Wisconsin which became our permanent home. This is where our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren live.

Going back to the “GOOD OLD DAYS” my husband worked at Krueger Metal Company, later at Green Bay Foods. I worked at Kaaps Restaurant, candy shop and bakery, until the place closed. Later I worked with my husband at Green Bay Foods from where we both retired. Our family travelled throughout the United States and Europe, being fluent in 4 languages: Slovak, German, Polish and English. I did a lot of reading and writing, from family history, to letters including my diaries. I also enjoyed my garden, growing flowers and vegetables. During the winter months feeding birds and squirrels and any little creature that came along. Our backyard welcomed everybody, from family, relatives, friends and acquaintances. Just like my husband used to say, “Invite them all!” If they come they will be here and if they don’t they won’t be here. We had garden parties in the spring and summer, and our recreation room was filled with people from birthdays, Christmas and New Year’s. Our backyard was haven to our precious grandchildren, 8 of them, all boys. It was their playground.

My Hobbies: Stamp collection, coin collections, and crafts, my favorite was making Christmas ornaments, especially Christmas stars.

Now with all my love; along with my farewell to all my children; Erika Harnowski (Longin), Alfreda Anderson (Arthur), Rick Harnowski (Barb), Eva Kuzma (Marek); my 8 precious grandsons, Mariusz Kedzierski, Marek Kedzierski (Kathy), Christopher Anderson (Dana), Dan Harnowski (Laura), Josh Harnowski (Katie), Ryan Harnowski, Eric Kuzma, and Mathew Kuzma; great grandchildren, Kedzierski: Andre, Lexi and Natalia, Kedzierski: Lydia and Max, Anderson: Olivia, Braxton and Gabriella, Harnowski: Gavin and Caleb, Harnowski: Alina, Anden and Calyx.
My loving parents Emilie Magerl Reiter and Eduard Reiter (both deceased); my siblings, Reiter: Vincent, Karl, Karoline, Hedy, Albrecht, Klara and Erika; my nieces and nephews, Reiter, Monika, Shems, Wayne, Lanette and Roger Gardner, Gary and Timothy and Robert Reiter, Pedigo, Jennifer and Robin.

My dear friends and acquaintances; Bog zaplac and Aufwiedersehen

I have lived a long life filled with many things that I am proud of but my greatest pride was bringing my family to the United States to have a better life.
