Lee Nagel

February 19, 1948 — May 26, 2014

Early on Memorial Day, May 26, 2014, Leland Nagel died in his sleep. Preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Ann Nagel, Leland is survived by his sister, Colleen Erba and her husband, Francis; brother, Galen Nagel and his wife, Marleen Bye. Lee’s nieces are Anne Marie Erba, Kyla Bye-Nagel Kyri Bye-Nagel, and Krista Bye- Nagel, and nephew Joseph Erba. He is also survived by the large community that he loved and who loved and supported him.

Lee’s ministry began as a grade school teacher where he began his lifelong dedication to service for others. He went on to serve as Admissions Director at the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota where he infused students, classes, and Campus Ministry with his heartfelt faith, guidance and creative genius for fifteen years. At the University of Mary, he directed plays and retreats and co-founded the Shade Tree Players, a children's theater where acting was done solely by children.

In 1990, Lee became Director of Total Education for the Diocese of Green Bay and served, not only as Superintendent of Schools, but also as Director of the Adult Faith Formation, Youth Ministry, and Catechesis. He continued to follow his own call of faith on the national level as a consultant for Catholic publisher RCL-Benziger, sharing his time with parishes and Catholic schools. At this occupation, he provided in-depth spiritual formation and served as a frequent presenter of parish missions. The following summer, he was named the Executive Director for the NCCL, where he continued to vision, lead, support and form catechetical leaders.

Every person Lee encountered was a recipient of his graciousness, kindness, and respectful attention. He acknowledged every individual as a unique child of God. Lee’s booming laugh, exuberant singing voice, and infectious sense of joy will be always remembered. We will miss him greatly and look forward to our reunion in heaven.
