Jaloy “Jay” Virnig, 80, of Green Bay, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014 after a long battle with cancer. Born on January 29, 1934, in Cross Plains, WI to Francis “Frank” and Bernita (Beuthin) Virnig, Jay graduated from high school in 1952 before serving in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. A long-time industrial plumbing and insulation salesman, Jay also spent fifteen years as a bus driver for Lamers Bus Lines. Jay was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, and in the past enjoyed singing in church choirs wherever he lived. Jay always enjoyed simple living and had a strong desire for himself and others to “just relax”. Other interests he shared were fishing, gardening, history, a good (or bad) joke, one-on-one conversations with loved ones, and the Green Bay Packers. He will be sadly missed by his family and his many friends and acquaintances.
He is survived by his close friend and caregiver, Barb Wotachek, the mother of his children, Patricia (Macken) Virnig, as well as seven children and their spouses: Anne-Marie (David) McDonald of Hudson, WI, Paul (Nora) Virnig of Neenah, WI, Kari (Bruce) Femmer of Palmyra, PA, John (Denise Oehldrich) Virnig of Hubertus, WI, Joe (Kirsten) Virnig of Menomonee Falls, WI, Jennifer (Joseph) Schindlbeck of Aurora, IL, and Jamie (Melissa) Virnig of De Forest, WI. Jay is also survived by his fifteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, his sisters Janice Smith and Shirley (Ross) Dietzman, his brother Cyril Virnig, and several nieces and nephews.
Jay is preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law, Gordon Smith, his sister-in-law, Caroline Virnig, and three nephews.
Visitation for Jay will be at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1484 9th St., Green Bay, WI on Thursday, March 6 from 9 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m., with Rev. Patrick Beno officiating. Additionally, a memorial service will be held on Saturday March 8, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Cross Plains, WI.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Woodside Nursing Home in Ashwaubenon as well as the nurses from Heartland Hospice in Green Bay.
