Jane (VanderMeer) Chartier

June 26, 1934 — October 6, 2014

Jane (VanderMeer) Chartier, 80, Green Bay, died unexpectedly at a local hospital on October 6, 2014, after a brief illness. Born on June 26, 1934, in Middletown, OH, and raised in Waterbury, CT, she is the daughter of the late John and Mildred (Coleman) VanderMeer. Jane married Richard Chartier on October 1, 1959.

She graduated from Michigan State Normal College (Eastern Michigan) in 1956 with a Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy. Jane worked at Brown County Mental Health Center for over 27 years, until her retirement in 2002. She was involved with the League of Women Voters, and was a proud mother of four children. Jane was a kind caring person, whose kindness transcended both her personal and professional life. Her children, friends, and patient’s welfare and happiness were paramount in her life. Jane also possessed great skills in sewing and handicrafts as she made most of her children’s clothing as well as down jackets and other winter garments for her children herself. She was also very proficient in knitting and cross-stitch. Every winter she handmade Christmas ornaments, inspired by important family or current events for her friends and family. In Green Bay she was an avid gardener and grew organic vegetables before they became popular. After her divorce from Richard in 1974, she worked full-time and had one-hundred-percent responsibility for raising her four children, which she did selflessly and admirably. After a full day at work, she always made dinner and enjoyed that ritual time speaking with her children. When her children became adults, she enjoyed a cocktail hour and spending that time discussing both politics and the Packers. Jane was always an avid Packer fan who wore jerseys on game day and bought her children stock in the team. She was always a thoughtful daughter, and spent hours every week talking to her mother in Connecticut during her mother’s elderly years. Jane was very fond of the Christmas season, spending that time thinking about and purchasing many thoughtful gifts for her children and grandchildren. Although, Jane was never fond of traveling, she often visited her children in both the state of California and the country of Norway. She always loved living in her house on Monroe St. in Green Bay, but came to also find happiness in her final years at the Age Well assisted living center. At Age Well, she enjoyed the social activities and community spirit.

Jane is survived by four children, David (Toni) Chartier, Tiburon, CA, Mark (Gerardine) Chartier, Oakland, CA, Matthew (Pamela) Chartier, San Jose, CA, and Brooke Chartier, Green Bay; four grandchildren, Max, Mia, Piper, and Zoe Chartier; one sister, Suzanne (Robert) Shaw; three nephews, Bruce and Douglas Shaw, and Paul VanderMeer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Col. Richard (Liz) VanderMeer; and three nephews, Jeffrey Shaw, Jeff and John VanderMeer.

Private services will take place at a later date in California.
