James F. Simonet, 87, Green Bay, passed away peacefully with his daughter at his side, early Sunday morning, November 3, 2013, while at the Jack and Engrid Meng Hospice Residence. Born on October 27, 1926, in Green Bay, he is the son of the late Clarence and Lillian (Warner) Simonet. Jim is a graduate of Premontre High School, Class of ‘44 and also attended St. Norbert College before entering the military. He served in the Pacific Theater while in the US Army. Jim was proud to have obtained the rank of Sargent at the age of 18. After his military discharge, he married LaVerne LaRoche on August 30, 1948, in Green Bay and she preceded him in death on January 14, 1994. Jim later married Carole Trehus and she also preceded him in death in May of 2006.
Jim will be remembered for his work ethic, gourmet cooking and sense of humor. He was in the wine and spirits industry for well over 50 years and served as the president of Gateco Liquor Company in Eau Claire for over 30 years. Early in his life, he also worked as a reporter for the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Jim received many awards and acknowledgements for his wine acumen. He had a personal friendship with the late Vince Lombardi and with many of the players in that era. Jim was also a member of the American Legion Post and the Knights of Columbus.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Dianne Crowley of Wauwatosa; four grandchildren, Brenda, Joseph, James, and Jackson; one sister, Patricia “Pat” Green of Appleton; one brother, Donald Simonet of Marinette; one sister-in-law, Beverly VandenBoom of Green Bay; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was also preceded in death by his brother Roger.
Visitation at Malcore (East) Funeral Home, University Ave. at Baird Street, Saturday, November 16, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorial service 12:00 p.m. (noon) Saturday at the funeral home. Burial in Allouez Catholic Cemetery with full military honors.
