James Patrick Schauer

October 13, 1942 — August 16, 2022

James Patrick Schauer passed away on August 16, 2022. He was born on October 13, 1942, to the late Richard (Dick) and Isabel (Kroll) Schauer. On June 24, 1967, he was joined in marriage to Elizabeth Ann Braun.

Jim was the owner of Kroll’s East, which was passed down to him (and for a time, his sisters) by his parents, Dick and Isabel. He began working at Kroll’s East when he was just 11 years old and retired two months ago. He put his heart and soul into the business and his work ethic was matched by few; a trait his children observed, honored, and learned over time.

Jim loved watching sports of all kinds, but his passion was football. From grade school at St. Phillips to High School at Premontre, he was a star running back who set school records in his day. Jim was a Packer’s fan since his childhood, beginning with attending games with his father at City Stadium. He avidly watched and followed the Packers and regularly attended games; one of his greatest memories was being at the Ice Bowl!

Jim graduated from St. Norbert College in 1967; it was through the college that he spent the summer of 1965 with a group that worked with the priests on the South side of Chicago and took part in the Dr. Martin Luther King march in July.

His greatest love and achievement were his family. He loved traveling with his wife and soulmate, Bette. Jim also loved cutting trails and clearing out sections of the woods with his sons and teaching them how to use chainsaws and split wood for the fireplace and wood burner. He loved teaching all of his children and many of the grandchildren how to drive the “quad” or ATV; going “creek walking” with them in the winter months and bike rides in the summer up Scray’s Hill and all the way to the Town of Morrison for breakfast. He also loved playing cards, poker with his father-in-law and brother-in-law, hands and feet at the cottage; but especially cribbage which he taught all of his children from a young age. He was very competitive and could accurately count the points almost instantly and played on the same board that he received from a very close friend for over 50 years. But most of all he loved Jesus, his Lord and Savior, and is at rest in Him now.

Survivors include Elizabeth (Bette), his wife of 55 years; children Benjamin (Pam), Jennifer (Dan) Smith, Nathaniel, and Aaron (Sarah). Grandchildren: Michael, Alex, and Lance Schauer; Abigail (Jamie Krohn), Breanna, Cassie and Emily Smith; Jovi and Sawyer Schauer; Sam and Oliver Schauer; and Great-Granddaughter, Braelyn Krohn. He is also survived by his sisters Jill Mande and Mary Valitchka; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Judy and Robert Curry; sister-in-law Joyce Braun and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Isabel Schauer, his father and mother-in-law, Karl and Frieda Braun, his brother John (Jack); brothers-in-law Richard Mande and Terry Valitchka; brother-in-law Karl Braun, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law-Helen and Richard Cerney.

A celebration of life will be held at St. Bernard Parish, 2040 Hillside Ln, on August 30th at 11:30 AM, with visitation from 9:00 AM until 11:30 AM.

The family would like to thank Unity Hospice and Home Instead for their loving care and help during this difficult time. Also, a special thanks to Deacon Bernie from St Bernard’s for his care and prayers.
