Franklin David Hansen

December 13, 1936 — September 14, 2014

Franklin David Hansen, 77, Green Bay, passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2014. Born on December 13, 1936, in Waupaca, he is the son of the late Marcella (Duvenick) and Parmo Hansen. Franklin was named after President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, but his mother would not allow Frank’s middle name to be Delano. He did not have a crib as an infant, and instead slept in a dresser drawer for the first year of his life in a Center Street apartment. Frank’s family then moved to a home on the grounds of the King Veterans Home on Taylor Lake. Their home with the clover shutters did not have indoor plumbing.

Frank enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1958. After about six months, he was discharged due to the shortage of math and science teachers. Shortly after he began his career as a teacher.

Education was always a priority for Frank. He graduated from Waupaca High School in 1954, even though he did not attend kindergarten. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education and Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1958, where he finally had indoor plumbing. (Don’t tell that Frank would sometimes hitchhike between Waupaca and Stevens Point) He began teaching math at Preble High School in the fall of 1958, where he was only two years older than some of his students. Frank taught at Preble High School for 39 years, retiring in 1997. He spent the last 37 of the 39 years teaching in room 210. During the summers, Frank earned an interdisciplinary degree in math and education. He attended the first summer at the University of Illinois – Champagne, and completed the degree at the University of Oregon – Eugene (Go Ducks!). Frank was the president of the Green Bay Education Association in the early 1970s.

On April Fool’s Day in 1967, he proposed marriage to Nancy. According to Frank, “it was no joke!” Frank married Nancy (Van Drisse) Beyer on August 12, 1967, at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Green Bay. They resided in an apartment on Acme Street until moving to Allouez in 1968.

As a child, Frank walked alone through the woods at the King Veterans Home to attend Catholic Masses in their chapel. As he grew older, he lost his way with religion, but after meeting his future wife Nancy, she got him “back on track.” Frank joined Resurrection Catholic Parish in 1968, where he volunteered as a reader, distributor, and usher.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, Green Bay; one son, Thomas, Milwaukee (currently residing in Venice, Florida); one daughter, Susan Hansen, De Pere; one brother, William Hansen, Waupaca; one sister, Bette Briest, Eagan, MN; one sister-in-law, Mary Kay (Jack) Seidl, Luxemburg; and one brother-in-law, Jerry (Kathy) Van Drisse, Suamico.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother-in-law, Wesley Briest.

Private services will be held at Allouez Catholic Cemetery. Malcore (East) Funeral Home is assisting the family, 432-5579. Condolences can be expressed at www.malcorefuneralhome.com .
