Romaine Schanock

June 1, 1919 — October 20, 2014

Romaine W. Schanock, 95, Green Bay, passed away peacefully October 20, 2014. Born June 1, 1919, in Kenosha, WI to the late Frank and Clara Schanock. On New Year's Eve, 1948, Romaine eloped with the love of his life, the former Mary Ritter, in Lake Delevan, WI. They were later re-married at St. Patrick's Church in Green Bay on April 29, 1949.

Romaine would start his long, successful business career with Cadillac Motor Car Company in Highland Park, IL, where for 10 years he was the perennial top salesman. Possessing an astute entrepreneurial spirit, Romaine moved to Green Bay to open a relatively unknown restaurant franchise called McDonald's on Shawano Avenue in 1959. Over the next fifty years Romaine would establish one of the most successful and well respected McDonald's organizations in the state of Wisconsin. Growing to what is currently a collective total of 16 restaurants now operated by four of his six children, with a third generation following. He also provided first time job experiences and long-term careers for thousands of McDonald's employees along the way. Romaine's keen business sense, entrepreneurial spirit , and willingness to take risks continues to flourish today.

A lifelong admirer of automobiles, Romaine was a collector of all types of cars, passing that love on to his children and grandchildren. Romaine was also an avid golfer who enjoyed a good round with his friends followed by a "spirited" game of dice. One of Romaine's favorite things was spending time in the summer with his family and friends at his cottage over looking the bay at Shore Acres in Dyckesville, WI.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; five children, Dan Schanock, Debra (Steve) Daffinson, Donna Stout, David (Kim) Schanock all of Green Bay, and Darcy (Emmett) Cregan of Sturgeon Bay; son-in-law, John Pavlik of Green Bay; eleven grandchildren, Sam, David, Jenny, Nick, Tom, Jimmy, Michael, Annie, Carly, Mary and Evan; five great grandchildren, Ethan, Lucas, Lily, Evelyn, and Isla; one sister, Phyllis Trecroci.

Preceded in death by one daughter, Diane Pavlik; one great granddaughter, Autumn Daffinson; one sister, Geraldine (George) Schwartz.

A private family memorial celebration will be held with a champagne toast to a truly wonderful man. Entombment will be at the Allouez Chapel Mausoleum. Malcore (East) Funeral Home is assisting the family.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to AseraCare Hospice, Home Instead, and especially for the private care given by Darcy, Gloria, Jane, Shelli, Kim and Amanda. Thank you , ladies, for all the tender loving care.

Over the years Romaine's generous and humble nature has both influenced and touched the lives of countless people in the community. In lieu of flowers, please direct all expressions of sympathy to the Ronald McDonald House of Northeast Wisconsin or The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Green Bay.

We love you, Dad! Keep it under 100!
