Henry F. Stokes, 90, died January 30, 2014. Mr. Stokes was born July 20, 1923 in Queens, N.Y., the son of Richard P. Stokes and Mary A. Stokes of Queens Village.
He graduated from Bayside High School in January, 1942, and briefly attended Lehigh University before leaving to join the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. In 1951, following his years of service, he completed his degree in engineering at New York University.
During the war, Mr. Stokes served with distinction as a test pilot, specializing in multi-engine aircraft including the B-24, B-25, and B-17. He was stationed at Ladd Field in Fairbanks, Alaska with the Army’s Cold Weather Testing Detachment. In Alaska, Lt. Stokes was tapped as the pilot for Sir Hubert Wilkins, the famed arctic explorer, who was mapping what was then the Alaska Territory.
He married the former Ruth H. Kovacs, of Rutherford, N.J. on March 31, 1947. They had two children, Sandra and Henry Jr. (Hal).
He worked for the Atlas Cement Corporation from 1945 to 1958. Henry then worked at Martin Marietta from 1958 to 1962. He worked as a broker for the commercial real estate firm, J.I. Kislak of Newark, NJ, from 1962 until his retirement in 1991. The couple lived in Crown Point IN, Orlando FL, and resided for thirty-five years in Ramsey NJ. In Ramsey he was active on the Parish Council at St Johns Episcopal Church, and on the board of directors of the Ramsey Golf and Country Club. Upon retirement, Mr. Stokes and his wife moved to Cape Cod, and lived for several years in Yarmouth, MA. Mr. Stokes moved to Green Bay in 2004, following the death of his wife.
He is survived by his one son, Hal, Hal’s wife Kim Dickinson of Scituate, MA; one granddaughter, Hannah of Scituate and one grandson, Andrew of Green Bay.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; their daughter, Sandra Stokes and his one brother, Richard Jr.
Visitation at Malcore (East) Funeral Home University at Baird St. Monday, February 3, from 4 PM until the time of the memorial service at 7 PM at the funeral home. Memorial service will also take place later in the spring in Ramsey, NJ. Interment at Union Cemetery in Ramsey, NJ.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established at the funeral home.
