Grace L. Johnson

November 21, 1918 — August 20, 2013

Grace L. (Nabbefeld) Johnson, affectionately known as “Gracie Lu”, 94, passed into eternal life on August 20, 2013, following a short period of declining strength and health. Grace was welcomed into the Heavenly Kingdom with the open arms of her Lord and Savior and also her husband of nearly 55 years, Elmer T. Johnson. Born on November 21, 1918, in Cadott, WI, she is the daughter of the late Albert and Myrtle (Breen) Nabbefeld.

Grace attended Cadott & Eau Claire schools. She married Elmer Johnson on August 26, 1940, in Cadott, and he preceded her in death on April 29, 1995. Together they welcomed four beautiful children into their family, and they will miss her dearly. Grace and Elmer moved their family to the Green Bay area in 1947. Here they made themselves a beautiful home and enjoyed many friends and a lifetime of memories.

In the past several months, our family has been drawn together in a new way. Our mom/grandma, who had lovingly and patiently cared for us for so many years, has now needed that same care from her family. Grace’s pride and joy was her family. She loved spending time with each of her children and their families, and together they made many memories. Grace was an avid card player and made numerous friendships that will always be treasured. She enjoyed playing the piano, and spending time at the casino. Her love of sports included the Badgers, Brewers, Packers and golf. Elmer and Grace were also charter members of Resurrection Catholic Church in Allouez.

Grace is survived by four children and their spouses, Maxine (Dale) Hartwell, Green Bay, Janet (Jim) Garceau, Georgetown, TX, Jeff (Sue) Johnson, Larkspur, CO, and Mary (Don) Kotecki, Fort Meyers, FL. She will also be lovingly remembered by nine grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; two great, great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and one sister and brother-in-law, Loretta (Richard) Hammond.

Due to the construction at Resurrection Catholic Church, visitation will take place at St. Matthew’s Church, 130 St. Matthew’s Street, on Monday, August 26, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral Mass. Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Paul Demuth officiating. Entombment at Allouez Chapel Mausoleum.

Mom/Gramma we are so very happy for you that you have joined Daddy, Moni, Pop, Lori and Dick, and you no longer have to suffer. We are going to miss you terribly, but are so comforted to know that we will be together again someday. Until then…..

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Bellin Hospital and Rehab, Rennes Rehabilitation, and Unity Hospice. They would also like to thank her loving granddaughter and caretaker, Lisa Huben.
