Dale D. Preston, 75, died Sunday, July 21, 2013, at home, following a short illness. He was born on October 24, 1937, to Bliss and Mildred (Herzog) Preston, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Dale graduated from Michigan State University in 1959, and worked as a city planner for Green Bay for 40 years. Dale served in the United States Army stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Green Bay and the United States Power Squadrons.
Dale’s passion was the Great Lakes - he studied their explorations, weather, lighthouses, ports, harbors, ships, and their role in the growth of the Midwest. He willingly shared his knowledge with others. Dale’s library of sailing and the Great Lakes was extensive. An avid sailor for over 60 years, he was proud to have raced three times in the Port Huron to Mackinac Island Race as navigator on the boat of a childhood friend.
Dale is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy; his children, Ann and Hal Evensen of Verona, WI, and Jeff and Mollie Preston of Menomonee Falls, WI; five grandchildren, Claire, Leah, Kaela, Ethan, and Sarah; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Preston of Dearborn, MI, and Sara Whelpley of Phoenix, AZ; one brother-in-law, Paul McIlrath of Cedar Rapids, IA; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Bruce Preston; one sister, Beverly Mallory; one brother-in-law, William Whelpley; and his aunts, uncles, and cousins.
